Ayşe Gökkan


Ayşe Gökkan was born in 1965 in Urfa. She is a journalist, writing in many different women’s magazines and newspapers (in Kurdish and Turkish). She made a documentary on women’s murders and suicides. She has written many research articles on women and peace, women and immigration, and women and politics. She has been elected as the mayor of Nusaybin (a border town) in the 2009 local elections. She has developed many projects about woman-friendly cities. She actively participated in local and international actions against borders and walls. For 30 years, she has advocated for women’s freedom in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Now she is an active member of the TJA (Free Women Movement), The Platform For Struggle For Women Held Captive By Force, and is a delegate of WWM (World March of Women). She serves as a local mediator for women’s freedom in many contexts.
